HARD work and dedication paid off for Carramar student Alexander Williams when he recently won silver and bronze at the Australian Gymnastics Championships.

The St Stephen’s School Year 6 student came second in the vault, while the WA team he competed for came third overall.

“In the lead-up to the competition, I trained for four days each week for a total of 19 hours, so I was really pleased that my hard work paid off,” he said.

Williams, who has been competing in gymnastics since he was six, was selected in the WA squad after he achieved a qualifying score in all six individual events: floor, vault, rings, high bar, parallel bars and pommel.

“To win two medals at my first national championships made me feel very proud,” he said.

Williams hopes to qualify again next year, with his ultimate aim to one day represent Australia in the Commonwealth Games.
